Some couples have a beautifully romantic “how we met” story. And then there’s Roo and CJ. They met through friends, both coming from a small town where apparently everyone knows everyone — including the fact that Roo’s dad was CJ’s PE teacher! 😂 Then one day Roo offered her a cigarette. And that was it.
Well… not quite. They spent the next year as firm friends, drinking tea and talking absolute rubbish before eventually deciding to “make it official”. Fast forward two decades and the tea has been upgraded to wine, but the talking rubbish has apparently remained very much part of the relationship.
Their day was colourful, relaxed, full of laughter and completely centred around having a brilliant time with the people they love. As a Balgeddie House Hotel wedding photographer, these are exactly the weddings I love photographing.
From tea and rubbish to twenty years together
Their story is one of those wonderfully ordinary beginnings that somehow becomes something extraordinary.
A cigarette.
A cup of tea.
A year of friendship.
And then twenty years of doing life together.
These days, their favourite things to do together include travelling, sightseeing and finding castles — although they did once make the unfortunate discovery that one of the castles they’d travelled to visit was so old that it didn’t actually exist anymore. 😂
They also love binge-watching TV series, with Game of Thrones being a particular favourite. They’d even recently completed another rewatch after visiting the studio tour in Ireland.
A colourful Balgeddie House wedding
That same love for fantasy carried straight through their wedding day, from the dragon egg keepsakes to the lego guest book and a harpist playing the Lord of the Rings theme.
The bride looked incredible in her beautiful lace wedding dress, with vibrant pink and purple hair and a sparkling headpiece. The groom wore a traditional Scottish kilt, creating a brilliant contrast of classic Scottish style and colourful individuality.
There was colour everywhere, plenty of laughter and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere from the beginning.
And then there were the children.
Lots of children.
Which meant lots of running, playing, dancing and general wedding-day chaos — exactly the sort of thing I love capturing.
Wedding photography at Balgeddie House
One of the reasons I love wedding photography at Balgeddie House is the variety the venue gives you without needing to spend half the day travelling between locations.
The gardens are perfect for portraits, with mature trees, lawns and plenty of greenery creating a beautiful backdrop for photographs.
For Roo and his wife, we could step away from the celebrations for a little while, wander through the grounds and create some quieter photographs together before heading back to their guests.
And that’s important to me.
I don’t want couples spending hours of their wedding day standing around while I take photographs.
I want you to enjoy yourselves.
We’ll make time for beautiful portraits, but we’ll also leave plenty of space for everything else — the hugs, the drinks, the conversations and the moments you didn’t know were happening.
A Fife wedding that felt completely like them
What I love most about Roo and his wife’s wedding is that it never felt like they were trying to create a “perfect” wedding.
It felt like their wedding.
Twenty years of friendship, tea, wine, travelling, castle hunting, TV marathons, Edinburgh nights out and talking absolute rubbish had brought them to this point.
And that’s what I want wedding photography to capture.
Not just the dress.
Not just the flowers.
Not just the pretty venue.
But the story underneath it all.
The people.
The personality.
The history.
The ridiculous moments.
The quiet ones.
Everything that makes your relationship yours.
