Hi, I’m Chanelle with Love is Magic Photography and today I want to talk to you about five questions you should be asking any prospective DJ. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but these are things that I’ve seen on the wedding day. And I think you can totally avoid them with just a couple of questions. So number one is, do you require wireless internet, especially if your venue is in a remote location, you’re going to want to let your DJ know that he’ll need to bring a hotspot or have some other work around.

Number two is where do you source your music, I’ve actually photographed a wedding where the DJ sourced the music entirely from YouTube, complete with commercials in between.

Number three is, well, you provide wireless microphones, and you want to for two reasons. So first, during your speeches, you want to make sure that your family or bridal party, whoever is giving the speech can be center stage on the dance floor, and not have to be stuck in a dark corner or right next to the DJ. And the other reason is for your ceremony, if you’re saying your own vows, or maybe just have your efficient thing, something funny or cute about your story, you want to make sure everybody can hear it. So ask your DJ to either give you a tripod with a mic or to give the mic to the officiant. Neither of these are great for photos. But there is a third option, ask if they have a lavalier mic. And that way you can either make the groom or the efficient, and it’s not super distracting, and photos.

Number four is up lighting. Most DJs include up lighting in their packages. And it’s a great way to turn a simple venue into something colorful. And that really has a cool atmosphere for your wedding.

Number five is can we see your performances online. And so with Zoom and all of the DJs that have been doing happy hours for corporations, there’s probably tons of video out there that you can ask to view your DJ. And the reason you want to do that is you want to see what kind of energy and vibe they’re going to bring to your wedding. And you want to see how they keep the party going? Are they letting songs fully stop? And then have 10 seconds of dead air before starting again? Or are they mixing them together? Are they able to read the crowd and see you know what kind of music they should go into next. All of these are things that will you’ll be able to easily see if you can actually view a live performance.
