This wedding at Skybar Edinburgh had everything: colourful outfits, cocktails, Edinburgh Castle views, emotional hugs, children on the dance floor and a reception that became increasingly energetic as the evening went on, this was such a brilliant wedding to photograph.
Most importantly, it felt completely like the couple.
And that’s what I love most about Edinburgh wedding photography — capturing all the little things that make a wedding feel like your wedding, rather than creating a collection of photographs that could belong to anyone.
A rooftop wedding with Edinburgh Castle views
One of the obvious attractions of a Skybar wedding is the view.
Perched above the city, the venue has incredible views across Edinburgh, including Edinburgh Castle, while the large windows and rooftop terrace provide plenty of opportunities for photographs.
For this wedding, those views became part of the story without taking over.
There were photographs of the couple together overlooking the city, group photographs with Edinburgh Castle behind them and plenty of candid moments as guests enjoyed drinks and caught up outside.
The best thing?
We didn’t need to spend hours travelling between locations.
We could step outside, make the most of the view and beautiful light, take a few photographs together and then head straight back to the party.
Relaxed and candid wedding photography
I know that not everyone loves having their photograph taken.

This wedding had so many of them.
The people make the photographs
The photographs from this day aren’t just about the couple.
They’re about everyone who came to celebrate with them.
There are photographs of family and friends gathered together on the terrace, guests enjoying drinks, friends laughing and plenty of completely unplanned moments throughout the reception.
One of my favourite parts of the day was watching the dance floor develop its own personality.
The children got involved.
The adults got involved.
The groom got involved.
And before long, everyone seemed to be dancing.
Those photographs are exactly why I love candid wedding photography in Edinburgh. They’re imperfect, spontaneous and full of energy — which makes them feel so much more meaningful than a photograph where everyone has simply been told to smile.
A wedding reception full of colour
The colourful details continued throughout the reception.
From the flowers and cake to the outfits and cocktails, everything added to the feeling that this was a celebration rather than a formal production.
I always photograph those details, but I don’t want them to dominate the gallery.
For me, they’re there to help tell the story.
The cake being cut.
The drinks being raised.
The decorations waiting for guests to arrive.
The little details that you’ll completely forget about in ten years’ time until you see them again in your wedding photographs.

The thing I love most about this wedding is that it never felt like the couple were performing for the camera.
They were simply having a brilliant day.
They laughed.
They hugged their friends.
They danced.
They spent time with their families.
They took a moment together overlooking Edinburgh.
And I photographed it as it happened.

I’ll make sure you have the beautiful portraits and the important family photographs, but I don’t want you to remember your wedding as a day spent being photographed.
