A maternity session is all about the excitement you and your partner feel for your growing baby and of course the growing bump! This article will help you prepare for a maternity session. The maternity dedicated session is the best way to capture the images of your beautiful round belly and the emotions and feelings you and your partner have for your unborn baby. Most Maternity sessions I photograph include your partner, so we can maximize the number of poses available.
MATERNITY PHOTO LOCATIONS
To personalize your session and tell your story I recommend photos in your home, in an Airbnb or at an outdoor location of your choosing. I encourage you to pick a location special to you like your favorite family activity, or you can choose from a variety of locations I have listed in the blogs below:
Weather & Session Time
I want to give you the best possible photos and the best experience and a large part of this will depend on the lighting and weather: On a sunny day we generally begin shooting 2 hours before sunset. On a cloudy day, do not fear! Lighting is actually soft and beautiful, but we do need to start earlier (appx 3 hours before sunset). On Rainy Days we will have to reschedule.
If your location is a popular beach or an urban space we might consider an early morning session. That way we will have better access to the area and fewer people to work around.
What to Wear
There is really no right answer when it comes to what to wear. Fitted tops show off your baby bump better than loose clothing but a flowy dress is more fun and looks elegant and whimsical in all outdoor locations.
Choose stretchy black yoga pants or your pre-pregnancy jeans unzipped for a few fun shots (not the maternity waist band jeans).
It is important to coordinate your looks. You do not have to match but consider pastels or light colors contrasted with bold color – free of wild or distracting prints. Don’t wear the exact same color. Do wear the same color family, like a dark and a light of the same color.
Mix things up by choosing bright heels with a neutral or light outfit or choose neutral heels with a bright dress. Try bold jewellery with solid colors. Match earth tones with flowery pastel patterns. If your fiancé wears light or neutral colors, contrast him with bright color and neutral accessories. Try to avoid loud patterns and graphic tees.
BEACH PHOTO TIPS
- If you are thinking about getting in the water, bring a change of clothes so you do not drive home wet.
- Bring baby powder and a towel to remove sand before getting in the car.
- Bring comfy shoes even if you are going barefoot. Many beaches in Laguna have rocky areas we may need to navigate.
- Empty your pockets. You don’t want to have keys or phones showing through your pockets.
- Be on time! The sun is only out for so long. The later you arrive, the less time we have to shoot!
- Relax! You don’t have to be a pro at this! I am going to help you along the way and its going to be a blast. Enjoy this time together and make a date out of it. Plan dinner afterwards and celebrate!
PROPS
Choose props that have meaning! They should accessorize you and not distract from you. Consider these:
- Flower crown (my fave!)
- Sonogram photo
- A Due Date sign
- Baby shoes
- Baby Blocks to announce Boy or Girl or announce the name
- Stuffed Animals
- Balloons that spell Baby or a bunch in pink or blue.
- Blanket and picnic supplies
