There’s something incredibly special about photographing weddings where everyone has travelled across the world to celebrate in one place. It instantly creates this feeling that every hug lasts a little longer, every speech means a little more, and every moment together feels precious.
This beautiful Melville Castle wedding brought family and friends together from across the globe from Malasia and England for a weekend of celebrating love in Scotland. Set just outside Edinburgh, Melville Castle is one of those venues that feels tucked away in the countryside while still being only a short drive from the city. It’s the perfect combination of historic Scottish charm, peaceful woodland surroundings, and elegant architecture.
As an Edinburgh wedding photographer, I love venues that give couples plenty of variety without needing to travel anywhere else on their wedding day. Melville Castle has exactly that. The sweeping driveway, mature woodland, colourful gardens, grand stone exterior, and elegant reception spaces create endless opportunities for relaxed, natural wedding photographs from morning until night.
A Relaxed Wedding Morning at Melville Castle
One of my favourite things about weddings here is that nearly everyone can stay at the venue together. The morning has such a calm atmosphere because nobody is rushing between different locations. Instead, everyone can simply enjoy spending time together before the celebrations begin.
Sorna and Gregor both got ready at the castle, surrounded by their closest family and friends. There was so much excitement throughout the morning, with laughter echoing through the rooms and everyone helping each other prepare for the day ahead. That relaxed pace carried through the entire day, allowing everyone to be fully present with the people they’d travelled so far to see.
A Scottish Celebration Full of Personality
The couple shared two ceremonies. The Hindu ceremony was warm, emotional, and vibrant. And the Scottish ceremony included a traditional hand fasting ceremony e Groom wore a traditional Scottish kilt in red to match his Hindu bride and he wore his house tartan for the wedding reception. The bride’s intricate henna added another meaningful layer to the day, blending family traditions with a Scottish castle wedding in such a beautiful way.
Their guests embraced the celebration just as wholeheartedly, wearing soft pastel dresses that looked stunning against the vibrant rhododendrons blooming throughout the castle gardens. Seeing everyone gathered together beneath the towering trees, laughing between portraits, perfectly captured the joyful atmosphere that surrounded the entire day.
The evening celebrations were full of energy, incredible food, heartfelt speeches, and plenty of dancing. Whether it’s a lively ceilidh that gets everyone involved or simply watching generations of family celebrate together, these are always the moments I love documenting most. They’re the memories couples rarely realise they’ll treasure until years later.
Portraits Around the Melville Castle Grounds
One of the biggest advantages of choosing Melville Castle for your wedding is that every portrait location is just a short walk away.
We wandered along the tree-lined driveway, stopping beneath the canopy of ancient trees where the couple held hands and looked back with huge smiles as they strolled through the estate. These are always some of my favourite moments because nothing feels forced. It’s simply two people soaking in the fact that they’re finally married.
The castle itself creates a dramatic backdrop, but I also love using the quieter corners of the grounds. The blooming gardens, winding paths, and woodland edges give every gallery a wonderful mix of grand Scottish architecture and intimate natural portraits.
As we wandered through the estate, the flowering rhododendrons became one of my favourite backdrops of the day, adding pops of pink and purple that made every image feel like something out of a fairytale. Those final portraits perfectly told the story of the day, capturing both the grandeur of Melville Castle and the excitement of heading back to celebrate with everyone they love.
An Evening of Celebration
The celebrations continued inside the beautiful marquee beside the castle, allowing guests to enjoy the best of both worlds: the atmosphere of a historic Scottish castle alongside a spacious air conditioned reception filled with incredible food, heartfelt speeches, and plenty of dancing.
One of my favourite moments happened just before they rejoined their guests, when the newlyweds walked hand in hand across the grounds, waving excitedly towards everyone waiting inside. It’s such a simple moment, but it’s exactly the kind of memory that becomes priceless years later.
Whether it’s a lively ceilidh, emotional speeches, or simply watching generations of family reconnect after travelling across the world, these are the moments I love documenting most. They’re often the photographs couples don’t expect to treasure quite as much until they look back years later.
