There are few things more exciting to photograph than a proposal — especially when one person knows exactly what is about to happen and the other has absolutely no idea.
This Edinburgh surprise proposal at Ross Fountain was one of those wonderfully emotional moments where everything came together: a beautiful Edinburgh setting, a carefully planned surprise, and two people completely wrapped up in each other once the secret was finally revealed.
Set within Princes Street Gardens with Edinburgh Castle rising dramatically behind it, Ross Fountain makes an unforgettable backdrop for a proposal. But while the setting is beautiful, it was the genuine reaction, laughter and excitement between this couple that made the photographs so special.
Planning a surprise proposal at Ross Fountain
A surprise proposal takes a little more planning than an ordinary photoshoot.
The person proposing needs to know exactly where to stand, when to get down on one knee, and — perhaps most importantly — how to make it all look completely natural beforehand.
For this Ross Fountain proposal, the plan was to meet in Princes Street Gardens and spend some time exploring together. From the outside, it simply looked like a romantic afternoon in one of Edinburgh’s most beautiful locations.
Meanwhile, I was keeping a discreet distance and waiting for the moment.
That’s one of the things I love about photographing surprise proposals. There is this tiny window of anticipation where I know what’s about to happen, but the person being proposed to doesn’t.
And then suddenly, everything changes.
The moment they realised what was happening
When the proposal happened, the reaction was everything you could hope for.
There was surprise, emotion, laughter and that wonderful moment of realisation when the person you’re standing with suddenly understands why everything has felt just slightly different.
And then came the hug.
And the kiss.
And the enormous smiles.
These are the photographs that matter most during a surprise proposal in Edinburgh. Not just the photograph of the ring or the moment someone gets down on one knee, but everything that happens immediately afterwards.
The disbelief.

The squeezing each other a little tighter.

One of my favourite things about photographing a proposal is continuing beyond the actual question.
Once the secret is out, the pressure disappears.
There’s no more pretending.
No more worrying about keeping the surprise intact.
Instead, we can spend some time together creating a little collection of engagement photographs in Edinburgh.
For this couple, that meant wandering through Princes Street Gardens, stopping for photographs beneath the trees, embracing beside the fountain and making the most of the beautiful surroundings.
The photographs became less about the proposal itself and more about the two of them.
The way they look at each other.
The way they naturally hold each other.
The laughter that keeps appearing between photographs.
The excitement of knowing they’re engaged.
Exploring Edinburgh’s Old Town after the proposal
Once we’d finished around the fountain and gardens, we continued into Edinburgh’s Old Town.
This gave the couple a completely different backdrop for their newly engaged photographs.
The historic streets, colourful buildings and distinctive architecture created something much more relaxed and editorial, while still feeling unmistakably Edinburgh.
Victoria Street was particularly fun.
There’s something about wandering through the Old Town together after a proposal that feels wonderfully celebratory. You’re not trying to create a perfect portrait anymore — you’re simply walking around as an engaged couple for the first time.
We photographed them laughing, embracing, dancing and stealing kisses along the way.
Those photographs became a little story of their first moments together after saying yes.
